EIUI Team Member Speaks at “Governing Across the Waves” Workshop

On 26-27 September 2016, EIUI Team Member Dr. Elizabeth De Santo participated at the “Governing Across the Waves” workshop on global insights for transboundary waterways management in sensitive and congested maritime spaces. Focused particularly on the Arctic Bering Strait, the meeting was organized by the Center for Arctic Study and Policy (CASP) of the US Coast Guard Academy and its partners, including WWF and Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, where the meeting was held. The workshop aimed to support ongoing efforts by the American and Russian governments to achieve shared objectives in the Bering Strait, namely, safe, secure, and environmentally responsible maritime traffic. Dr. De Santo’s panel addressed environmentally responsible maritime activity, and she spoke about the importance of ecological networks of marine protected areas, and prioritizing biodiversity conservation in the face of scientific uncertainty and information gaps.

Official delegations from the coast guards of Argentina, Chile, Japan, and Indonesia, as well as representatives of the Russian Ministry of Transportation, and Arctic scholars from the United States, Canada, and European Union participated in the workshop.
